Sump pump installation and repair in Brainerd and the Lakes area
Installations, repairs and maintenance to guard against basement flooding, from a Brainerd plumber with over 25 years in the trade.
Chapter 01
What goes wrong with a sump pump, and when you find out
A sump pump sits in a basin in the lowest corner of the basement and does nothing for months. Then a thaw or a long rain arrives, the water table rises, and the pump either does its job or it does not. The usual failures are a pump that will not start, a float that sticks against the basin wall, a pump that runs without stopping, a check valve that has gone bad, or a basin with no second line of defense when the first pump gives out.
The trouble is that you only learn which one you have when the basement is already taking on water. That is why DB Plumbing in Brainerd treats the sump as something to look at before the wet season, not after: sump pump installations, repairs and maintenance, all aimed at one outcome, to guard against basement flooding.

How DB Plumbing approaches a sump pump job
On a repair, the work starts with the basin and the pump together. Is the pit clear of silt and debris, does the float move freely, does the pump kick on and push water out when the float rises, and does the water leave the house through the discharge line instead of draining back into the pit? Those four questions sort most failures quickly, and they tell you whether you need a part, a cleaning, or a new pump.
On a new installation, the basin, the pump, the check valve and the discharge route are planned as one system. A pump is only as good as the way it is set in the pit and the path the water takes once it leaves. In lake country, where thaws and heavy rain are part of the year, a pump that is the right size and set the right way earns its place. Call (218) 851-3424 to talk through your basement.
Chapter 03
Keeping it working: seasonal testing and a clear discharge line
A simple habit goes a long way. Before the spring thaw and again before fall rains, pour a few buckets of water into the basin and watch. The float should lift, the pump should start, the water should clear out, and the pump should shut off on its own. If it hesitates, hums, or does not turn on, you have found the problem on a dry day instead of a wet one.
Walk outside and check the discharge line as well. It should run away from the foundation, stay free of leaves, ice, dirt or anything that could block it, and drain freely. In a Minnesota winter a discharge that freezes shut can turn a working pump into a pump that has nowhere to send water. If anything looks off, call before the basement floods, not after.
